A children’s book about resilience

Monica Boeh, author

My name is Monica Boeh and I live with FSH muscular dystrophy.  I have a master’s degree in education, and I have been working for a nonprofit organization whose vision is to have a barrier-free Northwest Missouri.  I am part of a great group of people who assist people with disabilities and those who are aging to live independently in their homes.

I wrote my children’s book, Rolling with the Punches, to show kids about inclusivity and not underestimating others who live with a disability. My character Rebel uses a wheelchair and joins a roller derby team to showcase her talents.  Despite getting knocked out of her chair,  she picks herself back up and finishes the game. Competing in roller derby can literally knock you down–just like real life for Rebel. Her life is full of barriers.

Speaking as someone who lives with a physical disability, I find it is not always easy to pick yourself up and look beyond what you may feel as another limitation. My story shows that in the face of struggle we need to try and resolve our problems head on. It’s okay to lean on others for help but also remember when things are difficult to roll with the punches.
