The Virginia chapter of the FSHD Society is a local group of people, families, and advocates working together to support those living with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Whether you join us in person or virtually, our chapter offers a place to connect with others who understand what you’re going through.
Mollie Garrett, diagnosed with FSHD in February 2024, joined the FSHD Society immediately and began attending monthly online meetings. In April 2024, she attended a patient education day and met others with FSHD, which led to her involvement in Capitol Hill Day in May 2024.
Through the FSHD Society, Mollie has gained hope and a supportive community. As Co-Director of the FSHD Society Virginia Chapter, she is passionate about helping others live their best lives and looks forward to welcoming new members to the community.

Gary Lauck was diagnosed with FSHD1 in November 2018. Soon after, he joined the ReSOLVE study at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he worked with the dedicated research staff and learned more about the disease. Determined to be part of the solution, Gary helped start the Virginia chapter of the FSHD Society, aiming to grow the community and support others affected by FSHD.
Originally from a small town in West Virginia, Gary retired from the Navy in 2018 after nearly 30 years as a helicopter pilot. He now lives in Virginia Beach with his wife and two children.

While Gary & Mollie are powering the path forward, we’re always looking for passionate individuals to help with planning events, spreading the word, and working on other projects. Your involvement will make a big difference in growing the chapter and supporting those affected by FSHD.
