Iowa Chapter

Connect. Support. Inform. Strengthen.

Welcome to the Iowa Chapter

The Iowa Chapter of the FSHD Society is a local group of people, families, and advocates working together to support those living with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Whether you join us in person or virtually, our chapter offers a place to connect with others who understand what you’re going through.

We provide support, share local resources, and keep you informed on the latest research and care. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been living with FSHD for years, we’re here to support you, every step of the way.

Join your local chapter and learn how we can support you on your FSHD journey.

Meet the Team

  • Art Abrams

    Art Abrams

Art Abrams is the Chapter Director of the Iowa Chapter of the FSHD Society. His later-in-life FSHD diagnosis helped explain many challenges he had faced over the years. Like many people living with a rare disease, he initially felt isolated. That feeling quickly faded once he connected with the FSHD Society and began meeting others who shared similar experiences.

Inspired by that sense of community, Art founded the FSHD Society Iowa Chapter. His vision for the Chapter is simple and heartfelt: a welcoming group of FSHD patients, caregivers, and significant others who support one another, share experiences, and work together to navigate life with FSHD.
The group meets regularly, but it’s truly a 24/7 circle of friends. Always there to listen, to help, and to remind one another that no one is facing this alone.

While Art is powering the path forward, we’re always looking for passionate individuals to help with planning events, spreading the word, and working on other projects. Your involvement will make a big difference in growing the chapter and supporting those affected by FSHD.
