Robert F. Smith, Esq.
Robert F. Smith, Esq.

We are deeply saddened to report that Bob Smith, a member of the FSH Society’s Board of Directors, passed away last night following a brief illness. Bob was an attorney practicing in the areas of real estate and land use matters, estate planning and probate, and business organization and transactions from his office in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Bob was diagnosed with FSHD at the age of 14 and had been active with the FSH Society since 1994. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors as chair of the nominating committee, he acted as a facilitator at FSH Society conferences and provided support in many of the Society’s activities. Bob graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1969 and Boston University School of Law in 1972. In addition to volunteering at his church, Bob was involved in political campaigns at the town, state, and federal levels, and youth organizations. He was also the Founder and President of The Harwich Conservation Trust, a not-for-profit committed to the conservation and protection of open land.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Patti, son Luis, brothers Stephen (Deede) and David (Coleen), many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and a host of dear friends. He is also survived by his black Lab, Boomer.

At his request his muscle tissue will be donated to the University of Massachusetts Medical School Wellstone Center.

Calling hours will be Friday, April 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 at Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main Street, Harwich, MA.

A funeral service will take place, Sunday, April 12, at 2:00 at Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main Street, Harwich, MA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Harwich Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 101, South Harwich, MA 02661; The F.S.H. Muscular Dystrophy Society, 450 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA 02420; or The Sampson Fund For Veterinary Care, P.O. Box 1756, Orleans, MA 02653.
