The Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD is the only international event focused solely on funding progress for FSHD. Led entirely by dedicated volunteers, supported by staff, events take place all over the US and Canada.
We began the campaign in 2018 with just 5 events and an aggressive $105,000 fundraising goal, which we exceeded. In 2019, we welcomed 1,369 participants to 11 walks across the country and raised more than $420,000. For 2020, we set a goal of raising $625,000 with 17 events, then the COVID19 global pandemic threatened to derail our efforts.
Our amazing volunteer leaders were determined to move ahead by transitioning to a virtual event. Last year we celebrated 24 Virtual Walk & Roll events, more than 825 participants, 162 teams and an amazing $550,000+ raised!!
In 2021, the second year of a pandemic, this community of fierce FSHDers continues to face challenges head on. Determined to show how strong this community is, volunteers across North America - the U.S. and Canada - celebrated 29 successful Walk & Roll events.
Live, in-person events returned in most locations, but we also had virtual events. Teams created pop-up events and celebrations, hosting their own walk-day celebrations; on city rooftops, on neighborhood trails, as backyard luncheons, in conjunction with golf outings… It has been amazing to see the creativity and resiliency come to life!
4,720 walkers, donors and volunteers were a part of the effort
$678,000 raised, and counting!
Since the Walk & Roll was officially launched as a nationally branded campaign in 2018 we have raised almost $1.9 million for groundbreaking FSHD research and programs of patient education and support.
Great Fundraising = Great Rewards
To say THANK YOU to our wonderful fundraisers, we award prizes for reaching certain fundraising benchmarks...
Once again, our FSHD Radio podcast host, Tim Hollenback, held a 4 hour, coast to coast, Walk & Roll celebration livestream. Walkers and Rollers joined us live from Florida, to Canada, to California - and all points in between. We thanked our teams and top fundraisers, shared personal stories, and came together, one voice that is thousands strong, to say, "FSHD does not get the final word; we will keep walking and rolling until a cure is found!"
Team Captains, You Are Our Heroes!!!
Team captains put in a lot of extra time and effort to rally their family and friends for FSHD and we want to celebrate and support that. That's why we've created a Super Hero Success Kit for team captains... to help your teams achieve even greater success and have even more fun!
Participate in the way that works best for you!
In person or virtually, all roads come together through powerful online tools and an international livestream celebration. Perhaps you want to participate, but live far from the event site? Maybe you are a morning person and want to walk/roll at 7am! Whatever you are most comfortable with, there is a way for you to join this incredible annual effort!
We celebrate the success of the 2021 Walk & Roll and look forward to walking and rolling with you in 2022!
We are excited to welcome back Max Adler, best known for his roles on Glee or Switched at Birth, most recently seen in Trial of the Chicago Seven, as our Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD National Ambassador
"I watched my Mom and Grandma struggle with this disease, and I don’t want that to happen to anyone, anywhere, ever again. Searching to find a treatment and cure led me to the FSHD Society, the world’s largest research-focused patient organization for FSHD."
