Good Bad Things is unlike any film you’ve ever seen
by Erin Saxon, FSHD Society
Good Bad Things is almost here! Last August, we shared updates on the project, and now, we’re thrilled to announce that the film has entered its final stages of post-production. Good Bad Things stars the multitalented Danny Kurtzman (we interviewed him in 2019 about his successful apparel company, Ezekiel Clothing), who also happens to live with FSH Muscular Dystrophy. Danny co-wrote the script with childhood friend and filmmaker, Shane Stanger.
Good Bad Things tells the captivating story of Danny, an entrepreneur who defies the odds despite his physical disability, which has left him feeling mentally confined. When Danny and his best friend and business partner, Jason, face the imminent threat of losing their company, Danny sets out to win over a highly sought-after dating app as a potential client. However, an unexpected encounter with Madi, an enigmatic photographer, sparks a profound transformation, leading Danny on a journey of self-acceptance and the discovery of the extraordinary beauty within his unique body.
With his role in the project, star Danny Kurtzman defied the society-imposed and incorrect assumptions of what a person living with a physical disability can do, working tirelessly for eight weeks straight and acting in every single scene of this 95-minute feature film. He weathered this daunting schedule while also being brand new to acting. When asked how he knew Danny was up for the task, Stanger said, “I don’t think you can know until you do it. He’s incredibly passionate, quick-witted, and willing to put himself in uncomfortable situations. He committed himself fully and has never faltered in his dedication to the film. I’m proud of the work we did together and can’t wait for people to see Danny.”
Danny stars alongside Brett Dier (Jane the Virgin, Schooled, About My Father) and Jessica Parker Kennedy (Black Sails, The Flash TV series). Max Adler (Glee, Sully, The Flash), a long-time friend and supporter of the FSHD Society, plays a supporting role. Director Shane Stanger recently received his master’s degree from USC School of Cinematic Arts, and this is his directorial debut.
When asked about the film, Danny suggests that the main character’s “battle with self-doubt and his search for connection will resonate with many…A dating app allows him to put up a façade but leaves him fearful that he will ever find acceptance as he truly is. We all struggle. We all listen to the voices in our heads that tell us we are not enough. This film is for everyone.”
Yet, beyond its core themes, the film challenges ableism in the film industry by portraying a normal life with a physical disability. While supporting roles featuring actors with disabilities have increased slightly in recent years, this progress is glacial. Good Bad Things, a story centered around a character who uses a power wheelchair, feels both radical and long overdue.
The themes explored in Good Bad Things are universally meaningful but shown through the lens of a protagonist rarely seen in mainstream media. This empowering representation is a call to attention, reminding viewers that new stories deserve the spotlight.
Shane and Danny plan to enter Good Bad Things in the festival circuit beginning in 2024. We’ll be the first to let you know when and where you can see this remarkable film. Stay tuned!
