This month we will discuss Ayurvedic medicine, the ancient Indian system of integrative, holistic medicine. Treatments are personalized and include lifestyle, yogo, diet, and medicinal formulations, mostly plant-based. We will hear from individuals with FSHD who have used Ayurvedic approaches, as well as from a trained practitioner.
Kulangara Sivadas (‘Siva’) is a retired electronics engineer (and FSHD patient) living in southern California for the past 25 years. He originally hails from the Southern Indian state of Kerala. During his career, he worked as an R&D engineer in aerospace, magnetic data storage, and surgical robotics. He holds over 12 issued patents and several journal/ conference papers in various technology fields. He believes that he was able to extend his work life by at least 6 years due to a chance encounter he had with an Ayurvedic practice system specifically targeting neuromuscular diseases. Currently under the care of Dr. Sreejith (see below), he’s able to confidently say that his rate of decline has been brought under control. Also he wishes he knew about this therapy 11 years ago when he was first diagnosed with FSHD! In this talk, Siva will focus on his experience with Ayurveda and challenges with regard to FSHD patients.
We’ll also be joined by Dr. Sreejith R Venu, B.A.M.S., who will be Zooming from India. He is an alumnus of Sri Sri College of Ayurvedic Science and Research Center, Banglore, India. He underwent a comprehensive training program under the guidance of Swami Nirmalandagiri Maharaj for a duration of 8 years (2010-2017). Throughout this extensive training period, Dr. Sreejith acquired knowledge and expertise in various facets of medicine and treatment methodologies for diverse disorders. Presently, he practices at Sreevalsam Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Center, Kerala, India, with a primary focus on muscular atrophy, muscular dystrophy, FSHD and other disorders. His patients have witnessed remarkable clinical outcomes under his compassionate care .
Our monthly Zoom meeting on Wellness is held on the second Monday of each month at 5:00-6:00 pm ET. Each month, we’ll have a conversation starter topic, but this is an informal gathering and if the discussion veers off in other directions, that’s OK! We hope you’ll drop by to enjoy the company of some of the wonderful people in our community.
We will open the Zoom room a half hour early (4:30 pm ET) so members can enjoy an open forum to discuss whatever is on their minds. Rick Whitehead will be on hand to welcome you in. Wellness Hour has become such a popular destination and we never have enough time for everyone to share what’s on their minds, so we thought we’d try this approach.
If you are interested, please register by clicking on the link below. You only need to register once for the monthly series. You’ll receive notifications from Zoom with the meeting information.
